Babies Born to Older Dads May Have a Higher Risk of Health Problems
Just four decades ago,
only 4 percent of infants were born to fathers over the age of 40. Nowadays,
that number has crept up to 10 percent. This shift was seen across the United
States amongst different races, education levels, and locations.
Babies born to older
fathers, says that born babies will be more susceptible to health problems
including preterm birth, low birth weight, seizures and breathing problems. Many
of the health issues associated with “geriatric pregnancies,” such as low
infant birth weight, gestational diabetes, higher odds of preterm birth and
high blood pressure for the mother by which it affects the infant development
and it may also lead to compilations.
According to the recent
studies, they suggest that being a father later in life which leads to be
associated with higher risks in genetic abnormalities, offspring of autism and
mental problems. Children born to men aged 45 and over had a 14% greater risk
of premature birth, low birth weight and had a 10% higher risk of needing
breathing assistance and a 28% higher chance of being admitted to neonatal
intensive care when compared with babies who born to younger fathers. Further
assessment showed that once a dad hits age 35, there’s a slight increase in
birth risks overall. Women who is carrying the child of a man aged 55 years or
older have a 34 per cent higher odds of gestational diabetes.
After accounting for
things like the mother’s age and the parents’ health and demographic
information, the researchers noticed an association between paternal age and
likelihood of both child and maternal health problems. Significant associations
began to surface around age 45, and the data suggest that the older the father,
the higher the risks.
